Merry Christmas in March

At the start of the school year, Emmie began writing illegible notes on post-it-paper and handing it out to kids at school, asking "will you come to my tea party?" I even had a few students approach me and ask me when it was!  At the store, she would point to tea cups and say that we needed to buy them for her tea party. Any attempts to have a tea party with her plastic play set were scoffed upon - it wasn't real!  For Christmas, we got her a whistling tea kettle (the perfect balance between functionality and appeasing her desire), with the promise that she could have a real tea party with some friends. We finally made it happen.

The day of her party she met me at my bedroom door at 7am, dressed in her favorite dress, telling me that the dishwasher was emptied, and the counters needed to be cleared off and she was ready to vacuum. Her hosting enthusiasm was very sweet.

Foodwise, I made do with what I had at home and just tried to make it look cute. My favorite part was hearing the squeals of the girls as we brought each course of the tea over to their table. They oohed and aahed and it put a smile on my face and in my heart.

Emmie insisted they drink hot cocoa with marshmellows.  It was over lunchtime so I insisted that there be some healthy food: mini pb&j sandwiches and cheese and crackers, because everything at a tea party is mini, right?

These girls were good eaters and loved their apples and carrots.

They ate such a good lunch that they were hardly even hungry for dessert! Callie had just arrived home from college for a few days and I put her in charge of frosting the cupcakes. She always does a beautiful job.

Merry Christmas in March, Emmie! Glad it was a fun time.
