Room Reno

Last May as the school year drew to a close, I knew it was time to pull the pink paint out of the garage that had been sitting there for 10 months, or it would be fall before I could find the time to paint Emmie's room. I'm going to admit right now that this was not Emmie's color of choice, but this was my very last chance to create a sweet little girl's room and I decided to do it.

It was one of those "if you give a mouse a cookie" situations. I need to paint Emmie's scarred bedroom walls that housed her brothers for 9 years, but her ceiling really needs to be painted, too. I don't want to paint the ceiling until we replace the broken light fixture, and if we're going to replace the broken light fixture, then we need to install a fan because hers is the only 2nd story bedroom without one and it gets hot up there. Tyler had a busy May but set aside some time to install the fan. Because it had only had a light, it involved cutting drywall and installing the proper framing and it took 4-5 hours. Tyler hated every minute of it, but we powered through together and he got it done. Then it was my turn. He went on a business trip to Stockholm, and I raced around like a madwoman trying to get everything done so that it could be finished before he got home (he's not a fan of renovations and I love a deadline).

My kids were awesome helpers. Jacob is always willing to use tools, and since he put at least 1/3 of the hundreds of holes in these particular walls, I let him help spackle round 2. (Grandpa kindly did round 1, and I did a third round. I have never seen so many holes and dents in one room before. Thank you, block wars and push pins that have been banned from my house). I also gave Jacob the job of disassembling and reassembling Emmie's bed frame, because if her walls were going to be pink, the wood bed frame would no longer look good and I wanted to paint it white (if you give a mouse a cookie syndrome).

Isn't this young man such a good sport? I can't thank him enough! I'm pretty sure it was a younger sibling that wrote with permanent marker under the window - see the black scribble?

These walls looked awful. The pictures do not do it justice. Boys. For at least a year, all three of my boys shared this room. I just want to remember the holes and dirt and grime. They are a little more house broken these days.

While removing the phone jack cover I discovered what color this room used to be. Whoa! I was never a fan of this light tan, but I'll take it over brilliant blue.

Incidentally, the painting of this bedroom not only eradicated the last of the light tan from this house, it meant that now every single wall finish in this house has now been chosen by me - almost 11 years in the making.

I was a little sad to see these stars go. Happy memories, painting these for some tiny boys of mine. Sherwin Williams paint is the best. I did a light sanding and the dark stars didn't bleed through at all. Also, I have graduated from painter's tape. It is so much faster to just paint the ceiling, not worry about what gets on the walls, and then cut in by hand when painting the walls.

Just seeing the new paint going on was exciting - the room is starting to look brighter!

Emmie camped out in Camden's room for about 10 days while the renovations were going on. I am so happy that my kids love each other.

We were also dog sitting during this time. Our neighbor's sweet Great Dane, Angie, was gracing us with her regal presence. One night around 10pm I had the 4 younger kids tucked into bed and Hannah was lounging on Emmie's bed talking to me while I painted. I heard some tapping at the door and I was mad - those kids sure better not be awake - it was a school day tomorrow! I peeked my head out and found Angie. Sweet, arthritic Angie, who had made the trek upstairs simply because she didn't want to be alone by herself. She snoozed while I painted. I love this dog. It was a challenge painting around her, but worth it.

Furniture was the last fix for this room. Notice there are no before pictures of the room. We jumped right in and I never took any. Picture a hodgepodge of furniture, toys, and battered walls. Add in a broken light fixture with one bare bulb and some wooden blinds that were broken and could not be opened.

My husband loves the look of wood. I do too, but I just knew this would be so cute in white. He has never commented on the fact that I painted this bedframe.

Emmie had been asking for a bedside table for a long time. I had this antique table that was in my house growing up that is so cute and was just in the storage closet. I was torn about painting it, but the finish had a lot of water marks on it - not the pretty kind of antiquing.

The bookshelf was an afterthought but with the new room coming together I knew that it would look better if I changed the green to blue. I started painting the right side of the roof before I realized that I would want a before picture.

I had definite ideas about the color scheme and style that I wanted for this room, and I consulted with Hannah and friend Skye. The best part about it is that I achieved the look I wanted on the cheap!

New purchases: floor-length curtains, paint for the room and furniture
Finds from around the house: unused curtain rod that I spray painted (spray paint was just in the garage), sheer curtains in my get-rid-of pile, the quilt and sheets were from the older girls' room that I had loved and saved, throw blanket from the linen closet, side table from the storage closet, and some pictures that had been in storage ended up being perfect for the look (I did get one frame second hand for $3 to update the temple picture). I see other bloggers pull together a great look with things from around the house and I have always thought not my house, but this time it really worked!!

I was sooo close, but didn't quite get the room all wrapped up in time for Emmie to move back in before Tyler came home from Sweden. We had a few other surprises in store for him for an early Father's Day that took precedence. He kindly installed the curtain rod for me and I am so grateful. It takes me 4x as long to do that as it does him - he's pretty great that way.

Little girl loves these Hopscotch Hill dolls that she inherited from her older sisters. If they are in clothes at bedtime, she dresses them into their nighties every night while I read to her from our current chapter book. The temple picture is a cross-stitch that my sister Jayne did for us when we got married. It wasn't currently up on our walls and I was happy that it fit in her room so well.

This other gold frame houses a quilt square that my great-Grandma did. I framed it for my bedroom in our last house and it has also been in storage. The little rocker was mine. Grandpa S. made it for me when I was 8.

Tyler slept in this cradle when he was a little baby. Our first couple of babies did, too, but then it was too easy for older siblings to have access to the baby so it now houses beloved stuffed critters.

Emmie is thrilled to have her own little table. She bought herself a second hand CD player and she loves to listen to audio books and music. She HAS to have a cup of water by her side when she sleeps at night. Nightmares do not send her running into my bedroom in the middle of the night, but lacking a cup of water will.

Thank you, Emmie, for letting me pick the finishes in your room. I know that it will never happen again, and it has been delightful putting together a sweet and girly room.

I feel like it matches my precious little girl perfectly.

Piles of Puppies

While we may not have an actual dog living at our house right now, our house abounds in the stuffed variety, and they each have a name, a personality, and a place to be at bedtime.

This post was begun many months ago and the pictures are even older. I'm so glad that I took the time to start recording a precious part of Camden and Emmie's childhood.

The junior population declared that there are two non-canine critters that needed to be included in this puppy post.

Hammie the hamster and Koaly the koala were both inherited from Callie, and then there is Layla (named for Emmie's adorable friend from preschool who also had a lot of Beanie Boos).

Hawkeye, Kenle (named for a classmate of Camden's), and Eagle Eye.

June (named for Camden's favorite character in Little Einsteins when he was smaller) and the famous, cherished Big Sad Puppy.

A better look at Hawkeye, White Puff Cloud, Dora, and Leo the Husky. Sadly, Leo the Husky (this name is always spoken with all three words) went to school with Camden one day and he didn't return home.

Swirly the pig is another favorite. One afternoon a couple of years ago, Camden and Emmie wanted to make a stuffed animal. They tried but realized that it is much harder than it looks. I worked along side them and used these super soft minky scraps to create this pig.

Back to School 2018

With all of my kids going to school all day long, we decided to switch to an early school track. Those 45 minutes between the first notes on the piano for our morning song and the last person to duck out the door are pretty hectic, but we love having longer afternoons. There was no time for a photo shoot but we did get some traditional first-morning snapshots.

The senior (H: Mom, I don't have time for a picture. I'm late. I'm late. I'm late. Me: Just turn around)

8th grade

6th grade

3rd grade

1st grade

It wasn't until I was picking them up at the end of the day that I realized how color coordinated they were. It was so picturesque seeing them walk down the sidewalk together (the brothers picked up their little sister) but they didn't really want to cooperate for a picture.

Love, love, love these people!

Growing like a Weed

There have literally been times in the last 6 months that we have sent Jacob to bed, and when we see him in the morning he is visibly taller. His feet have grown 4 full sizes in the past year.

We had a bet going - if he was taller than me before he turned 14, I would buy him lunch. If he was still shorter than me when he turned 14, he would buy me lunch. He was taller than me by the time he was 13 1/2.

I took him out for his belated lunch a couple of weeks ago. He had been eyeing some coupons for Kentucky Fried Chicken that came in the mail and so that seemed like a good place to go. As I got in the car to take him to lunch, he was sitting in the passenger seat reading a book. I asked if I should go get my book and he said no and put his down. We could have had a reading date, but it was a lot more fun to visit with him and we had a great time.

He ate about 2,000 calories for lunch!!

Before

After

This was his first time at KFC and he didn't know whether to choose original or extra crispy. I told him what his dad would choose, and he agreed - extra crispy all the way. He also told me that he was willing to eat anything on the menu should I want to force KFC on him in the future.

A couple of weeks after the lunch, we figured out that he is also taller than Hannah now.

In order to be the tallest person in the family, he just needs to grow taller than Dad. It's not that far away! No bets this time around - we are all guessing that it will happen while he's 15.

Parents' Days 2018

Notes from little children are the best.

Emmie even got some facts straight. My favorite color is indeed blue, I do love flowers, I love Emmie, and I very much enjoy reading her stories. The peregrine falcon, though - I think Wild Kratt's had something to do with that one.

Nailed it on this one. Daddy is so good at eating cookies!

It is no wonder that our little girl has her dad wrapped around her finger - the feeling might be mutual. Really good at helping and faster than lightening?

But the real tear-jerker is this one:

Easter 2018

Birthday season + Spring Break trip + Easter + General Conference + regular life + April Fool's Day = too many traditions to keep up with this year! I hope it doesn't sound sacrilegious that I am so very grateful that next year Easter will be back towards the end of April where it doesn't compete with the rest of our activities and I can give it the energy it deserves. I like to celebrate Holy Week as a family and include the fun traditions of Easter as well, but this year it was too much.

We didn't get our Holy Week pictures up this year, but we did sit down and talk through the week of pictures with the kids.

Our Passover dinner had to be skipped this year.

We did NOT color eggs.

We bought less candy than ever and there was no neckwear or socks for the boys this year. Emmie did get bunny flats but that was just because the Easter bunny got wind that she had just celebrated her birthday. And they may have been super cheap - like $6.

We dumbed things waaaaaay down, but the morning of Easter there was a backyard hunt with a little bit of candy and coins, and in the front yard the 17 and older peeps in our family came up with an individualized hunt for each of the 4 younger kids, where at the end there was a chocolate bunny waiting for them.

Really, it all turned out just fine. I am glad that I did not add more stress to my life. Next year I plan to incorporate the spiritual aspect of things more throughout the week.

Ready for the beginning of their Easter scavenger hunts (color-coded, of course).

We even got a family picture! I will be super real and admit that in order to get sufficient sleep, pull off the scavenger hunt, and be dressed and sitting down in time for the morning session of General Conference at 10am, the shower had to be skipped. Besides a bad hair day in the picture, the kids won't remember that.

Oh yeah. I did get a package off to Callie in time. In honor of April Fool's Day, we loaded up some Easter eggs with candy and some others with other kinds of prizes, like

fingernail clippings

empty candy wrappers

an Oreo with a bite out of it

That was too much fun. It confirmed to her companion that her family has a very strange sense of humor, but it made our missionary daughter laugh hard so
mission accomplished!

Missionary Mail

The two youngest siblings at this house love to send mail to their missionary sister, and recently they got some back.

No words from this missionary mama, just pictures to treasure up.

My Funny Valentine

In the days leading up to Valentine's Day this year, Camden and Emmie were a little sneaky. On Valentine's Day, I found out why.
Be still my heart.
The sweetest and funniest Valetine's that I have ever received. Camden was so quick to share the credit with his sister which made my heart grow even bigger. How did I get so lucky?

Two words: Old Soul

The sweetest little messages, straight from the heart.
And there you have it. Happy happy happy Valentine's Day to one, one and all!
