My boys inherited a love of leaf piles from their father. The tradition is to gather leaves from the neighbor's yards and making an epic pile in our front yard. They spend hours and hours with wheelbarrows and rakes (and even the bike trailer) and leaves come from as far as 6 houses away. I draw the line when it is farther away than that. The fun is in the gathering, and sometimes in jumping in it. But no one ever wants to clean it up and mulch it for the garden. The accumulation of this year's pile took HOURS to mulch. The pictures do not do it justice. Of course, as we were working to move it we were still receiving shipments from neighbors so the pile seemed to take an awfully long time to get smaller. We were blessed with a long, mild fall and it is a good thing. It took several Saturdays of winterizing before we were finally able to clear off our front lawn and our garden received its winter blanket. I did love it when we were all working out there together for the final push on the final day. Tyler sent the leaves through the mulcher and the kids and I used 10 gallon buckets to stuff the mulch in and spread it over our berry beds. Doing yard work as a family constitutes some of my favorite times.
Drew with some of our potato harvest. Tyler buries these pots in the garden and puts the potato starts in them. It's really easy to keep covering the plants as needed, and harvest is a breeze - just pull up the bucket, dump it out, and gather up your potatoes.
