An Exciting Afternoon

One afternoon I was trying to make dinner and had finally gotten a hold of Tyler on the phone to make plans for the evening (life gets crazy when you forget to calendar earlier in the week). Camden walks into the room and I hear Callie say "Mom's on the phone, buddy, what do you need?  Are you bleeding?"  She took him to the bathroom and I went to take a peek and all I could think was that is a lot of blood...that is a lot of blood.  So I got off the phone and Callie cleaned him up and asked me to check it out and I determined that he'd be OK without stitches on his finger.
The next day he bumped his finger a couple of times and it would bring on more bleeding.  The last time it happened we were across the street, playing in the neighbor's yard.  To stem the dripping we used Camden's sock that he had removed, gathered up Emmie and all the vehicles the kids had ridden over and we made our way home.  I took my two little ones into the bathroom and sat Emmie on the counter, but then noticed a smell...she had pooped in her panties.  I set her down and asked her to hold still for a minute so that I could take care of Camden.  I started to wash his finger off and after a few seconds he starts to panic, "I am going to throw up, I'm going to throw up.  I NEED A DRINK!"  Conveniently Jacob and his friend had just come to pester me about playing the Wii so I sent him to get the drink.  Camden took a sip and then I looked down at him.  He was as white as a sheet, lips and all, so I sat him on the the ground (he had dropped his cup and water), and then finally laid him down when he didn't look any better.  Insert Jacob and his friend in all of this popping in and out several times.  Once was to say Jacob had crashed and gotten a new blood blister and again to ask if they could play the computer and the last time I shouted "I have enough emergencies already, just go away!"  To the friend's credit, he skeedadled and did not interrupt me again after that.

Then it was time to deal with Emmie.  I knew Camden wasn't doing well when he was just a couple feet away from the mess we were cleaning up and it didn't even phase him, so once E was cleaned up I called Tyler to ask how to revive an almost-faint Camden.  In the minute I took to step into the kitchen to see to another child I went back and Camden was snoring on the bathroom floor:

Sleeping Camden, Emmie's mess in the background.

I moved him to the couch when I had a chance and he groggily asked, "Mom, am I still bleeding?"  Off to the bathroom for myself and when I came back, he had his eyes open and was munching on a hot dog.  Yes, a HOT DOG.  I was floored.  "Where did you get that?  Did you just get that from the fridge?"  But no, the kids in the room affirmed that he hadn't left the couch.  Then he says to me, "Mom, it was just an accident.  I didn't do it on purpose."  And I remembered earlier in the afternoon when I caught him getting into the refrigerator, trying to pull out a hot dog and I had said not right now, buddy, and he screamed and cried that he hadn't had a hot dog yet today.  Since then we have learned that he started, and is the sole member of, the sneaky hot dog club.  More on that later, but I will say that several times over the last couple of months I have found him under the kitchen table sneaking a cold hot dog straight from the fridge.

I did learn after all of this excitement that it was a pocket knife that cut Camden.  I think maybe he's learned his lesson.

And no, dinner was not ready on time that night.

Let it be known to all that there are now actually four members of the Sneaky Hot Dog Club. Camden has admitted two more "Sneakers"--cousins Aimie and Katie--and a "Scarer"--some random kid off the street, definitely not his sister or anything--to ensure the theft of yet more raw hot dogs.
